New machine problems

Having recently brought a new PC with Windows 7 installed, I was surprised to be having problems with it so soon. This afternoon when I booted the machine, I was greeted with a screen that said "Wait, preparing desktop!" and it went to the HP Desk top that I had when I very first switched the machine on? Nearly everything that I had done on the machine in the two weeks that I had had it - getting everything transferred from my old machine etc. had disappeared. Well not quite everything? My Incredimail survived, as did the Opera browser - though Chrome didn't?

A pop up window said something about this being a temporary HP account but I couldn't find any way to reinstate my own account and rebooting just kept going through the same routine. In the end I restored the system to a few days ago and everything seems to be back to normal! I am dreading switching the thing off tonight, in case I have the same problem tomorrow sad

Does anyone know what the hell is going on?

The machine is brand new and is an HP p6-2022uk. Intel core i3-2120 CPU with 4 Gb RAM, 64 Bit system.

Re: New machine problems

I'll do some digging in the morning but it sounds a bit like it restored itself (or tried) to shipping state which may mean their pre-install is a bit wonky.  I presume it came with a HP branded Windows 7 licence but did they give you actual disks as well?

Re: New machine problems

Silkie, that's exactly what happened, except it retained some of the installs that I had made since purchasing it. I didn't get any discs with the machine, just the prompt to make a "rescue disc" - which I have done. The system restore seems to have done the trick as it booted fine today - in point of fact, it seemed to boot quicker! Hopefully, it was just a settling in hiccup and things will be fine from now on...

It seems the Windows 7 software is even pre-registered now as I wasn't prompted to do so, yet is states that it is registered?

Thanks for the reply.

Re: New machine problems

Corporate copies are.  The catch is of course they are usually locked to the hardware of the company and the motherboards they tend to have made for them.  It could have just been an error in the install script used by HP.
