Do you have the make and model as that would help a lot?

I'll look around a bit but in the mean time the method I use for cleaning is computer duster or compressed air with a vacuum running to try and catch the dust when you blow it out.
Also is the machines BIOS reporting the CPU temperature?

In my experience, the fan itself gets a bit dusty, but usually only enough to make it a bit noisy - the heatsink however gets clogged up with dust and then the fan is effectively redundant....
Luckily no unscrewing needed - just a lot of puff! Find the grill on the laptop which covers the heatsink (pretty close to the fan as it is what pulls the air through it), then blow into it really hard (With the laptop off!). You should see loads of dust blow out of the fan grille - carry on until you dont see dust... Job done... (hopefully!)
