Looking at the number of recent posts and the fact that virgin have now pretty much killed blueyonder, should this forum be merged with the virgin one.
Lets face it: the BY website hosting has been dumbed down to Virgins level, many of the historically features and services have been removed. There will be no more new blueyonder users we cannot even create new aliases on existing emails.
There are really only a handful of regulars who still post.
It's a shame but I think it may be time to move on.
I'm sure you have something to say on this.
PS before I start getting hatemail, I am realy playing devils advocate here - or am I?

It's a fair question, and one that would best be answered by those who read and post here.
My views don't count, of course, but I think it would be useful to get a metaphorical show of hands from our users. Who's still here? Who would miss us terribly if we went? Who would rather get help here than on VM's own forums? (We can't "merge" with them, as we're entirely independent of them.)
Speak up, everyone. Your views count.

What would a merger with any official website achieve?
I don't really see any official website changing to take on any functions this one provides, so you may as well rephrase 'be merged with' as 'kill this forum and kick everyone off over there to'. Which doesn't make any sense, because this isn't a zero sum game; it's not like the usage of this site diminishes the quality of any official site. It's not like anyone needs to choose between the two.
The only real trade off here is the resource investment in this site against the user involvement. If it becomes more painful to maintain than is warranted by the usage, then it might make sense to change stuff.
The argument I made a while back was that the general chat side of the webby was as valuable as the help side, because it kept together a group of regulars with a set of skills that the more transient posters in the help forums could draw on. The chat side fuels the help side.
That said, I think providing a forum for people to moan about how terrible Dr Who is* is as noble an endeavour as any.
*Very.

If you haven't seen it then about half way down the page at this link is a fan drawn strip about Dr Who you might appreciate.
I'd miss the place as I might have to stop being a lazy sod and actually make my own website instead of posting here. Mind you all I do is empty a spam filter or two so I think the biggest say is for those that do the actual work. As for me I still pick up useful stuff all the time here such as that wonderful website Taz linked for helping you get the name of tunes.

Whilst agreeing with the original post in sentiment, I would really miss it.
I don't support the site as much as I, perhaps, should by contributing more. But mainly that's because it doesn't have the same feel as it did all those years ago when I joined it. I mean there is less and less advice being sought and more in the way of general chit chat. What advice is asked for tends to be way above my pay grade or even interest, to be honest. And we seem to be seeing fewer and fewer newbies?
Maybe, as Alphatwin said, if the maintainability of the site is becoming a burden, then it might benefit from a general watering down? But I would hate for it to just disappear. I still visit at least 4 or 5 times a day, always in the hope that I will be able to offer my, limited, advice.

I would certainly miss it, I still 'visit' daily but apart from Silkies 'wafflings' (no offence meant silkie, I enjoy them) very little is happening nowadays, especially in the ''Help' threads
and yet I notice that a 'new user' has registered today.
How do they find us? I wonder ...
Are there any other suitable sites from which to link to the forum?
Is it possible to change the name of the forum, other than 'byUsers', so that may be picked up by search engines?
If we were to join the virtual archives it would be great to organise a final meet, maybe even personal messaging 'ex-posters' with news of our demise and arrange a faces to names bash so that we may keep in touch..
I would certainly miss you all
.. for many years this forum has been a major contributor to my computing experience & enjoyment.

If I amuse then mission accomplished so no offence taken.
Sadly a lot of new users registering tend to be spammers.

I do click on it everyday and do read and enjoy your banter Silkie even if I don't always reply to them.
I come here purely for the quality of the replies, and to respond when I am able. My latest thread about servers is a good example of the quality of information served up. Unknown technical questions are generally worked out in the end by collective posting.
The subscribers are all gentlemen (except Dizzy and Miqueue) but they are ladies and the responses have never made any assumptions about the poster, and I cannot remember any personal attacks on anyone, which other forums seem to get their fare share of.
I have popped into other forums that have come up on Google to read the responses to a question I have entered and in every one, no matter what the question, there is always the answer - 'I think you need to reinstall the driver', even if the question was about the pwr supply.
Anyway, back on topic. I have enjoyed this forum for the above reason for many years and would be very sad to see it go. The economics have to be taken into account, of course, unless it's being hosted on a home server
Maybe if there is any thought of letting it pass into the clouds [pun intended] thought could be given to expanding it.
The facility of allowing tags to be entered after a thread starter would benefit the forum by allowing it to be found in the search engines when a query is entered, worth a thought. The addition of a 'Hints and Tips' might bring more traffic.
Don't give up too easily though please.
To be honest, I have never visited VM's own site.

That's not the answer I was hoping for miqueue. I did know what sex you are but thought we might get into a row then we could have added dozen of post slagging each other off.
Ah well, will try with one of the others
Now about Silkie ....................

Well done Bengie,
At last somebody who puts up a reasonable argument for keeping the the forum going.
Its a good forum, contributors are friendly, helpful knowledgeable and less posts means less dross (in most cases).
But particularly when a new post goes does get going its regularly interesting.
Anyway its taken me a long time to build up my Karma (unlike some who can write their own)
and I don't want to loose it.
I need all the help I can get.
ps. All these edits: I must be getting so emotional I cant type strate.

I'm an infrequent poster, but generally visit and cast my eyes around the forum.
I wouldn't want to lose the forum or it's identity, don't see any troll wars, spam is quickly dealt with, knowledgeable posters, lots still in it's favour.
A lot of forums are also considering their status, traffic rates etc that's because there are so many and so varied sites nowadays, there's a forum for everything, the "cake" is only so big, although still growing.
Too many sites consist of a comment followed by a string of posts consisting of quotes of a post directly above and a string of smileys.

Even cold war era 'female' communist shot putters are dainty little flowers of femininity compared to my most assuredly maleness.
I actually resemble an old west prospector of late with a beard you could scrub an industrial wok with.

Wow - A question which if I am honest is a little bit overdue!
With no offence intended to the others, I think I am the laziest of our 3 currently active mod/admins (the other active 2 being JR and Silkie). I actually think I am being pretty delinquent in my role - as far as I'm concerned the role of a moderator is not only to move threads and delete spam, but also to start threads and encourage chat which I really have been pretty bad at.
I think the forum has suffered a drop in traffic for a number of reasons:
Blueyonder no longer exists - Our raison detre has kinda vanished...
Computers have moved on and the support offered from ISPs has improved - when we were at our "peak" Windows XP was still new, wireless was new and broadband was still basically new. Nowadays, a new Virgin connection comes with a wireless router, Windows 7 and OSX are very easy to set up and broadband is simply a fact of life.
Social Networking - I remember going to the last BY-Users "meet" - which was basically a trip to a pub in Birmingham with a few regular posters. I think I'm the only one still posting here. With the advent of Facebook et al - you don't need to find a place to meet strangers online, you can reconnect with people you did know. Is this a good or a bad thing? Who knows?
Spam - We are a difficult forum to join - well - actually we really aren't - but in order to reduce spam the process you have to go through in order to register here is pretty stringent in comparison with others. I've previously mentioned that I have not contributed to other forums because they insist on a longwinded registration process where I actually want to share a solution to a problem to help somebody. Unfortunately with the amount of spam we used to get, things had to be tightened up and we are now just as tight as other sites. I regret the need to make those changes - but I think it was the right way to go.
I would miss this forum if it died - it's kinda "our little corner" of the internet. Perhaps it's inevitable, but if we can delay that process why not!

I looked back at the past few weeks and only really saw JR and Silkie - see told you I was lazy

I don't think it's costing anyone financially to run the forum, just Elfin's and JR's time, so if they are happy to manage the site then I see no reason to close it down. If/when that's not possible then I suppose that would be the time to switch off the lights and close the door
