Thinking of upgrading to 50mb cos when my son is on "wow" i cant even connect to the net and am getting really cheesed off with it,dont want to stop him playing it he pays the sub himself,we currently have a 20mb line,
Its a £30 activation fee and £8 to upgrade plus we get the router and n draft adapter
Questions is really,i think on here before someone mentioned using "qos" to apportion out the bandwidth between pcs,if that can be done ill apportion 20mb to his ip address
We have 2 other laptops that run off the current router both used for email msn and browsing,i presume they would still work without the expense of buying ndraft usb connectors?
Thanks for any help

I wasn't aware it sucked up that much bandwidth apart from actually downloading major patches and the initial install itself. Are you sure it's not something else like torrents? When the client is set up badly they can have quite an adverse effect on a network but otherwise an online game shouldn't cause that much of a problem.

I can give you my experience for what it's worth.
My sons were both playing big games at the same time, one on his pc and the other on his Xbox. With the upload speed of 1.5mb there was no complaints from either about latency or speed and I noticed no fall off doing what I normally do on my pc at the same time as them playing.
The download is good. Normal downloads from the majority of sites is around 800k-1mb, but the boys with big pipes like Microsoft regularly give a download of 6-8mb. This was shown to be the case the other day when I downloaded a 1.5gb from MS between 7-8mb and then went direct to Asus where I got a download of 120k.
This is what makes it good for multiple users, it seems to have no effect no matter how many are on at the same time.
I would give it a go as is before sharing or setting amounts for any specific users. There is 'no' throttling with 50mb as there is with the other speeds.
I hope that's been of some use.

this has been a persistent problem for me im sure its "wow" because hes not played it this year until now and all my connection probs have suffered again, even on wireless he can get a 14mb download speed from our 20mb service
I know from looking on his pc he doesnt have any download software its just the games he plays on steam etc,he was playing sumthing the other day and downloading a 2gb patch for wow i believe although it seems a hefty size, didnt seem to affect him but my pc was slow as hell
think i will move to 50mb and try it

well heres the scenario which has occured today,i run the updates for vista and leave the computer doing its bit, when i return the download has stopped,i go into my sons bedroom and hes playing "wow",using msn and ventrillo,on a 20mb line surely that should nt interrupt my download?

Of course that shouldn't happen. The router switches between users so they all get a share and should have no effect whatsoever on your download except maybe slow down a bit.
It might be worth pressing the factory reset button on the router and setting it up again.

having spoken to a very nice chap at virgin he said 50mb upgrade will not solve the problem and i would be wasting my money, yes id get a new router, dongle and modem, however its £35 install and £20 activation, and as he said if it doesnt work then its a waste, the tech advisors have no idea because they are not trained on wireless routers or so they told me,
Both my wife and daughter have wireless laptops used for email, msn and shopping
I seriously have no idea how to solve this,i purchased a new router "buffalo whr g300n" hoping this would solve the problem and that my previous router a belkin 54g was faulty but ive still got the same problem

So does that mean you are wired?
Tomorrow I will call a few around and try and replicate it. My pc is wired.
