buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

Have purchased this external drive to store all my pics and music, the file transfer speed seems very slow transferring from my desktop to the external harddrive is running at 12mb\sec,is this right? just seems remarkably slow to me?
also it has a usb2 turbo speed utility, turning this on doesnt increase the speed

I notice in the properties section of the drive in policies its set at "optimise for quick removal" where as my internal hard drives are set to "optimise for speed"
is it safe to alter to "optimise for speed"?

running windows vista premium:)

Re: buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

Optimise for quick removal will probably minimise or disable write caching - therefore, for small file operations it could make a huge difference, but if you are moving a large file its unlikely to have much of an impact...

Sounds stupid, but are you certain its plugged into a USB2 port? Dont know how old your PC is, but it was common about 4 years ago to have a mixture of USB1 and 2 ports on a system - just that 11MB/s is the speed of USB1... seems a bit of a co-incidence...

Make sure that windows ready boost is disabled for that drive.

Lastly, if its one of those drives which needs two USB connections for additional power, make sure that both are on different ports (ideally the power only one could go onto an external powered hub (where power is plentiful). Or if the disk can "optionally" take mains power, try plugging it in.

Re: buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

ive set it to optimise for speed and its doubled to 25mb\sec
pc is only just 2yr old and the motherboard has 6 usb2 ports on,
hard drive is only connected to one usb port, and a mains power supply

i did read elsewhere to try plugging the hard drive in "hot" but the instructions supplied tell you to plug the device into the usb while turned on at the mains and i have retried that?

Re: buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

having looked in my device manager it reports "intel usb2 enhanced host controller"

presume it means the ports are usb2

Re: buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

Apparently the actual speeds are lower than the theoretical ones with USB2 and having just tested mine it peaks at about 31mb/s.

Of course the externals actual hard drive can make a difference, what model is this BTW?

Re: buffalo ext hard drive 1tb hdceu2

My mistake, of course it's in the thread title.

Well they use Seagate drives normally and SATA 2 models as well so I don't imagine it's the drive.  I'd try another port and if possible one of a cluster not connected to anything else with the rear ports as preference.

I usually test with HDTune free version available from the below website.
