PWP (Personal Web Pages)

What is pwp?

PWP are personal web pages given to you by blueyonder for putting up your own web pages. Most Internet Service Providers will give you this nowadays when you sign up and blueyonder is no exception.

What can I use it for?

Your pwp can be used for almost any kind of website you want (regarding, of course, strict protocols by blueyonder on the content). Remember, you have up to 30mb web space available to you which is actually quite a lot, and you can get many pages on this.

What programs can I use to create my web pages on?

The simplest program I have found for creating my web pages on is Microsoft FrontPage - http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/, as it has wizards to help you set up your web page, or even use their templates. This would be a good beginning program for anyone just starting to venture into the world of making their own web pages.

How do I apply for my PWP?

  1. To apply for your personal web space, you need to go to blueyonder web site's self-care section and decide which email address you want to use for it.

  2. When you go in here, the first screen you will see is:

    view sample screen shot

Fill in your username and password and press "login".

  3. Then you are taken to the screen below. Click on "Administer your PersonalWebPage (PWP)".

    view sample screen shot

You will then be shown the following screen:

    view sample screen shot

  4. To change the password for your PWP, simply select change password. You will then be taken to:

    view sample screen shot

Fill in the new password and confirm it, then press "submit".

  5. To rename your PWP, click on "Rename PWP" at the main screen and you will come to:

    view sample screen shot

The top box should have a drop-down box for all the aliases you have set up (see "changing an email alias"). It must be noted here that any email aliases that you have set up that include '_' or '.' are not allowed to be used. By choosing what alias you are going to use you will determine the the address of your website as it will take the form www.alias.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk (or now, which can be used in tandem with the other, you can use www.yourname.myby.co.uk), where alias is, of course, the alias you choose.

Once you have decided on the alias you want to use, then put in a password in the PWP password box. Make it something that is easy for you to remember, but that no one else knows. Fill it in again in the next box to confirm it. Then hit the 'rename' link.

Give fifteen minutes from you see this page, so that it gets set up correctly, then you can start uploading your site.

How do I upload my pages now that I have them completed?

Before starting to upload, you will need to know three things:

  • Your website address - in the form of www.<username/alias>.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

  • Your username/alias name

  • Your password

You can use Microsoft Front Page or a simple FTP client to upload your pages.

Remember, if you are wanting people to just be able to type in the address, rather than having to stick something like .../firstpage.html on the end, to call your main page one of the following:

  • index.html
  • index.htm
  • default.html
  • default.htm

Simply select the upload or publish web link from your menu in whatever program you are using. It will then ask you for the address, username and password (which we noted above). Type this in and hit publish/upload and away you go!!!!

How do I change my password?

If you want to change you password, perhaps because you have forgotten it, it is simple to do. Log in the same way as you did for applying for your pwp, only instead of using the password you set for it (that is if you have forgotten it), just use your primary login password (most likely the one blueyonder gave you) and you will see the following screen:

view sample screen shot

Now all you need to do is enter the new password and confirm it.

How do I change my pwp name?

If like me when you first set up your pwp site you ended up with it using your username rather than the alias you set up for it, simply contact technical support via the pwp newsgroup, blueyonder.support.pwp. Please note, however that this can take anything up to 10 days to be changed over, so please be patient!!!

What services are available on my pwp?

Unfortunately blueyonder have removed CGI scripts from their standard pwp pages. However statistics are still available, as is the ability to use .htaccess files. You can also still use the normal graphics files (such as gif, jpeg, bmp, etc), normal html and flat pages. If you are using FrontPage, you can also make use of it's special components that use the FrontPage Server Extensions.

How do I get my website listed on search engines?

As this is quite complicated, I humbly set you in the direction of the blueyonder web site page regarding this!
