Setting up email accounts

  1. Open Outlook Express so you will see (click on picture for larger view):

    view sample screen shot

  2. To set up your mail you need to go into the "Tools" menu and select "Accounts". The following screen will open up:

  3. Click the "Add" button and select the "email" option. This will start the Internet Connection Wizard. The first screen you will see here is one where you enter the name you want to use. This name will appear in the From: line of every message you send using this account. Enter your name and click the 'next' button.

  4. The next screen you will see is where you put the email address you want to use. In most instances this will probably be the one blueyonder sent you when you first signed up and will look something like bs09675@blueyonder.co.uk. If you have set up an email alias, however, you can use that instead. Once you have filled it in, click 'next'.

  5. The next screen is the difficult part. This is where you have to put the servers for outgoing and incoming mail. For blueyonder, the incoming mail server is a POP3 and is pop3.blueyonder.co.uk. The outgoing mail server is smtp.blueyonder.co.uk. You don't really need to know what this means, just that you need it! Remember though, the incoming mail server from another Internet Service Provider will be different, but if you are going to send all mail through blueyonder, the outgoing mail server will remain the same. Click the 'next' button when finished.

  6. On the next screen is where you enter your user details and password. These will be exactly the same as those sent out to you by blueyonder. Copy them in exactly as they are on the letter. Don't forget to tick the remember password box so you don't have to keep putting in the password each time you send/receive messages. Click the 'next' button when ready.

  7. And that is you! You will see a congratulations screen telling you that you have successfully completed setting up your email account. Click the finish button. You will now see the original mail screen, only this time it will have your email account in it! Click close to come back out of there.

Setting automatic email retrieval

This bit is easy to do. Simply click on "Tools" from the menu and select "Options". Make sure you are at the general tab, and then fill it in like in the picture:

Set how often you want to check for email to a time that suits you, but I find two minutes to be acceptable.

  3. Click on the "add" button and select "News". You will see the following screen.

    view sample screen shot

In here you type the name of the news server you are wanting to use. In the case for blueyonder it will be either:

    news.blueyonder.co.uk or news-lhr.blueyonder.co.uk or news-text.blueyonder.co.uk

A word of note here. If you are using either news.blueyonder.co.uk or news-lhr.blueyonder.co.uk you should tick the square beside "My server requires me to log on", otherwise when you come to post you will find that you can't. This is blueyonder's new way of trying to prevent people abusing the news groups. You DO NOT need to tick this box if you are using news-text.blueyonder.co.uk. Click 'next'.

  4. You will now be back to the screen in '1'. Click close and the following screen will appear.

Click 'yes' and this will begin the download of all the news groups that blueyonder host. When completed it will display a list of all of these news groups for you. Click 'OK'.

This will bring up a list of all your news groups. Beside each name is a little box which says "new messages only" beside it. Click each new box.
