Outlook Express

Introduction

Outlook Express is a cut down version of the Outlook application included with Microsoft Office. It doesn't have the original program's calendar, task scheduling, journal or notes sections, but it offers additional features for accessing e-mail and newsgroups

Detailed information on understanding Outlook Express can be found by clicking here, it is very graphic intensive. it will take a little time to load, but well worth reading.

In order to set up Outlook Express for use with blueyonder you will need to know the servers that BY use. These can be found on blueyonder's Technical Support page - and are also listed below:

  • SMTP outgoing mail server: smtp.blueyonder.co.uk
  • POP3 incoming mail server: pop3.blueyonder.co.uk
  • IMAP incoming mail server: imap4.blueyonder.co.uk (if you prefer instead of pop3)
  • News server: news.blueyonder.co.uk
  • News text only server: news-text.blueyonder.co.uk

You will also need your user name and password - as supplied by BY

In the internet accounts box that appears click the NEWS TAB
Click ADD and select news from the drop-down menu

In the box that appears type in a "Nickname" that you wish to appear on display in the Newsgroups. It is wise if you are female to pick a Non-gender nickname

Click Next

You now enter an email address, However it is best to MUNGE it to prevent SPAM robots

To Munge you corrupt your address AFTER The @ sign ie:- youralias@SPAMblueyonder.co.uk a human would know to remove the spam to reply, a robot would not therefore saving you the heartache of spam messages

Click Next

Now type in the news-server you wish to use We currently have access to two:

  • news.blueyonder.co.uk ( which is the main news server, this group requires authentication using your user name and password to log on )

  • news-text.blueyonder.co.uk (the same groups as main news but only text is allowed and any binaries are stripped out making it very fast)

If you have setup news-text.blueyonder You would now just click finish

If you have chosen news.blueyonder.co.uk you will need to continue and tick the "This Server Requires me to log on" box Then fill in the account name, in our example jksc02864 and main password. Do not tick the "logon using secure password authentication" box.

Click Finish. You will now be back at your internet account box. When you click CLOSE --- You will be asked if you wish to download the newsgroups, click YES and it will download the index of about 25.000 newsgroups (taking about twenty minutes)

You are now ready to select which groups you wish to subscribe to, and Post to your hearts content
