How do I set up my windows network to share an Internet connection?

There are two parts to this of which I'll cover.

This is for systems running Windows 98SE, or Windows ME using I.C.S. (Internet Connection Sharing)

Part One: setting up the "server".

Part Two: setting up a "client".

Part One Setting up the Server

Requirements

  • a little knowledge of Windows OS
  • Windows 98SE, Windows ME ICS
  • Two NIC (Network Interface Card) Ethernet Based [It would be best if there were two of different makes or models as this would ease setting up later on]

Note Uninstall any other sharing application before you install ICS

The first and main NIC should have been installed and running at the time your Cable modem was installed. So, we'll assume that you already have your working connection to the internet through this.

Right, let's get started... You need now to install the Second NIC which will be used for the LAN (Local Area Network) if you haven't done so already. There are two main types of connections to a NIC...

Cable Type Max. Length
10Base2 (Thinnet) [BNC] 600ft
10BaseT (UTP Category 5) [RJ45] 328ft

BNC is where you have a terminator at each end of one long cable and this connects to every computer on the network in one long line. It is the cheaper way of connecting as you only need to by another length of cable to add another computer to the network.

RJ45 Is the dearer method but much more upgradability in it and it can be faster. Using this method you will either need a "Crossover Cable" (restricting you to only two connected computers) or a "Hub" to connect your network up. These come in various sizes from 4 - 6 - 8 - 16 ports and way up...

You will have to find a spare PCI slot, insert the card and install the drivers for this, then reboot. You should now have two working NIC's installed. One for the connection to the Internet through the Cable Modem and One for the LAN.

Now we have the two cards installed we can setup ICS.

  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

  • Click on the Windows Setup tab, let Windows find the installed components.

  • Double click on the Communications icon, check the Internet Connection Sharing box and click OK to close the Communications window and OK to close the Add/Remove Programs window.

ICS will install and then launch the Home Networking Wizard.

As we are setting up a host we should click Host

Now this is where it helps if you choose a NIC that is different make or model to the LAN card. Choose the card that has the Cable modem Connected to it.

This is where you choose the NIC for the LAN

The next part is where you'll be asked if you want to create a Setup Floppy for setting up clients on other computers. Just tick the "no" button and the wizard will show the following...

The computer will want to reboot when this has finished.

Okay, if everything is going great you should see this window when you've rebooted...

To access the ICS controls

To access the ICS controls go through Internet Explorer -> Tools -> Internet options -> Connections and click the button "Sharing" under the LAN settings.

Which brings up a window that you can see what you are connecting to the internet with and what you're connected to the LAN with. This is also where you can turn off ICS if you needed to. You should have Never dial a connection ticked.

As you can see in this window the Internet is beings accessed through a 3Com Ethernet Link III ISA card and the LAN is being accessed by a Netgear FA310TX card. Yours will be different to this.

Manually checking the setup for ICS

Go to Control Panel -> Network will bring up this...

As you will see in here there are four hardware devices, two NIC's one dial-up adapter and Internet Connection Sharing. I have adapted this pic to show all the devices and protocols.

For the Shared TCP/IP protocol look at the properties and check they are as follows.

  • IP address -> Obtain an IP address automatically

  • WINS Configuration -> Disable WINS Resolution, do not tick "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution"

  • Gateway ->No Gateway, leave blank

  • DNS Configuration -> Disable DNS

  • The rest you can leave alone

For the LAN NIC TCP/IP protocol look at the properties and again check they are as follows.

  • IP address -> Specify an IP address, IP address 192.168.000.001, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

  • WINS Configuration -> Disable WINS Resolution

  • Gateway ->No Gateway, leave blank

  • DNS Configuration -> Disable DNS

  • The rest you can leave alone

IP Configuration

To have a look at the IP configuration of your computer when it has rebooted (if it needed to) is to run winipcfg by going to Start -> Run and type in winipcfg find the ICShare Adapter click more Info>> This is what you should get. The arrow is pointing to the only MAC address that needs to be registered with Blueyonder as this is the one that the Cable modem is connected to. All internet traffic is going through this. I have fogged out the IP address but this will show the IP that you have been given by Blueyonder.

This should be your completed setup of the server.

Now onto Part two Setting up a Client

This one is a lot easier to set up as you will see :-)

As above you'll need to install and connect up your NIC with all it's drivers... Once this is done have a look at the Network properties (an easy way to do this instead of going through the start bar settings etc is to Right click on "My network Places" and choose properties.)

In there you should see some thing like the following

view sample screen shot

Now as you can see there are a number of NIC's installed here but you should only have the one. Choose this and go to the properties and enter the following

  • IP address -> Specify an IP address, IP address 192.168.000.002, Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

  • WINS Configuration -> Disable WINS Resolution

  • Gateway -> 192.168.000.1

  • DNS Configuration ->  192.168.000.1 (as below)

  • The rest you can leave alone

view sample screen shot

For the IP address on other computers, this will increase by ONE for each new computer that you add to the LAN but the gateway and DNS setting remain the same for all of them.

In the Internet Options on a client, as above, you should have "Never dial a connection" ticked, but you will not have the "sharing" button in this window as ICS is not installed on the client computers.

Once all this has been entered you should reboot your computer. Everything should be set up now for the LAN to work.

Good luck and I hope this has helped :-)
