Manually Configuring WinMe for Dial-up

For those of us who are still using dial-up access trying to set up a connection without using the software provided by Blueyonder (an option which many users prefer) can be a daunting thought. However, like many things in life, when this procedure is broken down and looked at in a step-wise manner, it's really not as bad as most of us first imagined.

Initially, you should choose and make a note of the Point of Presence (POP) number you would like to use (this is merely the telephone number your computer will dial to connect you to the Internet), this is usually the most local number to you, although in practice, you can safely choose and use any number (with the exception of two).

Click here to see the list of blueyonder POP numbers.

To begin the process of creating a dial-up connection, first you must open the "Dial-Up Networking" Folder. This can be found by clicking the Start button, moving to "Settings" and selecting "Dial-Up Networking" from the list as shown in the screenshot.

Upon opening this folder you should see an icon called "Make New Connection" (see screenshot); double click this icon.

This should open up the "Make New Connection" wizard and to begin with you should enter a name for your connection. Eg "Surfunlimited" or "Blueyonder Internet" and ensure that your modem is shown in the drop-down menu. Click "Next" to continue.

Next, you should enter the area code and telephone number of the POP you made a note of earlier and also ensure that the country code of the United Kingdom (44) is selected (the example shows the Coatbridge POP number). Click "Next" to continue.

This should result in the final window of the wizard being displayed, informing you that a connection has been successfully created. You should click "Finish" to complete the wizard.

There should now be a new icon in the "Dial-Up Networking" folder called "blueyonder Internet" (or whatever you called your connection). Right click this icon and select "properties" from the list

Select the "Networking" tab of the newly opened Properties window and ensure the following:

The type of dial-up server" selected from the drop-down menu is "PPP: Internet, Windows 2000/NT, Windows ME." and is ticked

The ONLY box that is ticked is "TCP/IP"

This should look like this:

Next, click on the button marked "TCP/IP Settings". In the newly opened window, ensure the following:

  • The button box marked "Server Assigned IP address" is selected.

Select the button box marked "Specify name server addresses" and enter the following numbers in the relevant positions:

  • Primary DNS: 193.38.113.3

  • Secondary DNS: 194.117.157.4

Both boxes at the bottom of the window ("Use IP header compression" and "Use default gateway on remote network") are selected.

This should look like this:

Click OK to continue, then click OK on the original Properties window. To connect to the Internet, double-click the connection icon and enter both your blueyonder username and it's corresponding password in the relevant boxes and finally click "Connect".

Additional Tips

  • If you would prefer to have access to your connection from your desktop, once again right-click on the connection icon but this time select "Create Shortcut" and then click yes on the pop-up asking if you'd like to create a desktop shortcut.

  • Tick the "Save Password" box in the "Connect To" window if you would prefer not to have to enter your password on every connect.

  • Upon choosing "Save Password" the additional option of "Automatically Connect" becomes available. This should really only be used if you use a dedicated telephone line for your internet access as it will bypass the "Connect To" window and immediately connect should you or any program on your computer request it.
